Wonderling Begins 2012 BRP CanAm Title Assault…Woodhull Hosts Tour Opener…
St Catharines, ON…Jeremy Wonderling, the 2011 Bicknell Racing Products (BRP) CanAm Series champion, hopes to repeat as the 2012 Series champion. The second generation racer from Scio, NY would like to use the same formula he used for the 2011 title. That formula included winning the Series tour opener at Woodhull Raceway.
Ted White, Woodhull Raceway owner, and his team will provide the opportunity on Saturday April 28 when they host the 2012 Series tour opener at the popular Steuben County race place. They will open the gates at 4:30 for a 6:30 start of their race program.
Wonderling, 32, knows that winning is important, but that consistency is more important when chasing a championship. He would like to consistently win.
After the rain out on April 21 Wonderling shared, “Woodhull is a finesse track where it takes a perfect combination of driver patience and a good handling fast race car. A good friend of mine believes if you can win at Woodhull you can win anyplace. I think that might be correct. The track configuration makes it very difficult. Patience had not been my style, but I have sort of figured out the patience deal after several years of racing there weekly. My car is good, but it is the same as last year and several of the other guys have stepped up their program. It is going to be a tough deal this year.
I was planning on tonight as a final tune-up for the tour race, but rain ruined that plan. Last week I left my car home and raced Dad’s since he was out of town and we were working on a fuel system problem with that car. Now that might have been a mistake!”
Jeremy will have plenty of tough customers to contend with when the 10th anniversary BRP CanAm Series rolls off on Saturday. One of the toughest will be Glenn Whritenour. Whritenour is the defending and five time Woodhull late model champion. Whritenour hopes to earn his sixth title this year and he knows well that winning pays the most points.
John Waters won the Woodhull opener two weeks ago and many believe that was simply the opening salvo from Waters and his new Dale LeBarron team. LeBarron bought out Waters’ racing operation at the conclusion of the 2011 season and then hired Waters as his driver. The car is fresh from sheet metal to oil pan and ought to see victory lane often in 2012.
Other Wonderlings that Jeremy will be racing against on Saturday and all season long are his dad, Mike, and his brother, Mikey. Mike won the final race at Woodhull last year and Mikey won a special qualifier at Black Rock on Friday night.
When you think of Woodhull Raceway and potential winners you cannot count out the Knowles boys. Brian and Jason both have many laps and many wins at this track. They both have fresh equipment and a big desire to win their first ever BRP CanAm tour event.
Heading the list of Raceway 5 invaders will be Dave DuBois, Jim Johnson, and Jon Rivers. Black Rock Speedway’s 2011 Champion Mikey Wonderling will lead a strong contingent from Dundee that includes Carl Cleveland, Jared Hill, Bill Miller, and Quinn Sutherland. Bruce Miller calls Little Valley Speedway his home track, but he has lots of Woodhull Series weekly wins and would like to add to his win count on Saturday.
31 drivers entered last years Woodhull opener. A similar number is expected on Saturday.
