Bryce Davis Scores ISKY Win At Black Rock: Steve Dixon 2009 BRP CanAm Series Champion |
|
Dundee, NY…October 24…Bryce Davis earned his first BRP CanAm Late Model Series A-Main victory and Steve Dixon earned his first BRP CanAm Series Championship as the Series concluded its seventh year in grand fashion on Saturday night at Black Rock Speedway (BRS). The stories behind the headlines would make great script for a television reality show. Davis, a 2009 high school graduate from Canisteo, NY, flew in for the race from his technical training program in Atlanta, GA with high hopes of winning his first Series event. High hopes, but he knew the odds were not in his favor. Davis came very close to a Series win at BRS in August. He had a score to settle. The kid showed the maturity of a seasoned veteran as he ran wheel to wheel with Glenn Whritenour in the early laps of the ISKY Cams Championship contest. Wheel to wheel, so close that on lap 14 not even a transponder could separate the two. Davis showed atop the score board on lap 19. If he was reading the score board he could have / should have had a genuine anxiety attack. Car 20 was showing in second. Car 20 is operated by Wayne Robertson. The same Wayne Robertson and the same car 20 that had defeated Davis in the final laps at Black Rock in August. Bryce made not have realized it, but everybody in the pits and grandstand fully realized the significance of the situation. Then it got worse. Jeff Chesebro the winningest BRP CanAm Series driver (10 career) and defending Series champion took second from Robertson on lap 25 and set sail for Davis’s white Hot Rod Lincoln. The kid and his Hot Rod Lincoln held on for a very popular victory. In victory lane Davis shared the following, “…I have been trying to get this Series win for a couple of years. We came so close here earlier this year. This makes the trip from college in Atlanta worth it. I’ve got to thank my dad (Dave) for this. He puts his heart, sole, and a lot of money into this program. Not just my dad, but the whole family. This is a true family effort. My mom is the primary sponsor (Jody’s Hair Design) I want to thank ISKY Cams for the $1500 and this trophy check is just great. The trophy is going to my bedroom tonight. Tomorrow we will put it in the shop for everybody in Canisteo to see. Thanks to everybody who supports the Series and allows me to have so much fun…” Chesebro gave it a tremendous effort; in fact he was trying so hard that he almost lost the runner-up spot to the determined Robertson. At Scott Hixson’s flying double checkers Davis had about a car length advantage over Chesebro who had about the same advantage over Robertson. On lap 28 John Waters passed Glenn Whritenour to take the fourth spot which he held to the end. Whritenour, the 2009 Woodhull late model champion, crossed the line in fifth. Championship…The 2009 Series title chase went down to the wire. Steve Dixon entered with a 48 point advantage over Larry Knowles. Dixon earned the championship despite not starting the A-Main. Dixon earned 35 show up points with his car back in the trailer before the qualifying races. Knowles was caught in a lap nine crash which relegated him to 15th in the finish. 15th was worth 52 points. The unofficial final tally shows Dixon the champion with 1091 points, Knowles second with 1060. ISKY Camfather Back Row Challenge…Bruce Miller drew the number one starting spot, but opted for the $1000 Camfather Challenge. Miller is a three time BRS winner in weekly events. He won his heat after starting last. He came to win and $2500 is better than $1500 so he took the challenge. This second generation race car driver was up to 15th on lap nine when he was caught in somebody else’s crash and was towed to the pits with a badly damaged race car. No $2500, no $1500, and a lot of expensive rework for the winter months. The 24 car starting field was set from 31 entries via three Landrum Performance Spring heat races, a Mahle Engine Builders B-Main, and two provisional spots. Heat race winners were Jim Johnson, Mikey Wonderling, and Bruce Miller. Jeremy Wonderling won the B-Main. Adam Depuy and Nate Daggett earned the provisional spots. Notes: Both Bryce Davis and Steve Dixon are second generation race car drivers…Dixon’s dad, Bob, won BRP CanAm Series championship in 2003 and 2004…Davis became the fourth first time Series winner in 2009…Other 2009 first timers were Steve Hartman, Wayne Robertson, and Brian Kotarski…Tony Harris entered his first ever BRP CanAm event… Series rookie Adam Depuy was added as an alternate after Bob Bartlett could not start…Depuy retains his rookie status for the 2010 Series. Depuy will have a 2010 Rocket from ProSpeed for his 2010 BRP CanAm Rookie of the Year attempt…Brian Knowles earned the $100 Dart Industries hard charger award… ISKY Cams A-Main finish: BRYCE DAVIS, Jeff Chesebro, Wayne Robertson, John Waters, Glenn Whritenour, Dave DuBois, JJ Mazur, Brian Knowles, Greg Galligan, Quinn Sutherland, Nate Daggett, Adam Depuy, Mikey Wonderling, Dale Welty, Larry Knowles, Mike Wonderling, Jim Johnson, Bruce Miller, Jason Boyle, Jon Rivers, Jon Lichy, Carl Shetler, Jeremy Wonderling, Jason Knowles…DNS Steve Dixon…DNQ…Brandon Smith, Bob Bartlett, Tony Harris, Greg Young, Chris Peacock, Rich Karlnoski Visit www.BRPCanAmSeries.com for complete race results, point standings, and other Series information.
