Rivers To The Edge For BRP CanAm Win Woodhull, NY...Jon Rivers went to the edge of the Woodhull Raceway high banks to win BRP CanAm Series event #10 of the 11 event 2006 Series. Rivers now joins Jeremy Wonderling as the only repeat winners in the ultra competitive Series. Rivers won the battle and made progress towards winning the war. The Basom, NY speedster has been locked in close contest with Randy Hall for the top spot in the $21,422 Series point championship war all year. Rivers took the Series point lead after winning at Merrittville in May. His hunt for the championship took a major hit at Canandaigua last month when he was collected in somebody else’s crash and was credited with 20th finishing position with his crippled Darrell’s Auto Service Rocket GTO in the pits while Hall raced to a second place finish. “That was the longest 30 laps I have ever raced, “shared Rivers from Victory Lane. Rivers lead the entire 30 laps which, in fact, did take a very long time due five long caution periods and one red flag break. When questioned about his racing at the raged racer’s edge of the high banked paper clip 1/3rd mile track, “I knew that if I moved off the top Bruce [Miller] would go flying by. This Pro Speed Rocket worked great on the top, but honestly it was more defense than offense because Bruce is an outstanding ridge runner.” On lap 25 Miller’s challenge for the win took a big hit when Jeff Chesebro backed his Fitzsimmons Contraction GRT Grand Prix in on the top of turns three and four and passed Miller using Rivers’ top edge line. Chesebro, the defending Woodhull event winner, followed Rivers to Scott Colegrove’s checkered flag for second and his best Series finish of the year. Miller earned the final podium finish in his Strate Welding Supply GRT Grand Prix. His car which is “only almost straight” after last weeks major crash at Black Rock would have loved to stretch her legs on the top of the Speedway , but Bruce had her harnessed to the bottom since that was the only open lane. Larry Knowles continued his great late season performances with a charge from 18th to 4th in his CAT Rental Stores CRS GTO. One of the hardest to fall in Larry’s charge was his son, Jason, who made his first ever Series start in his dad’s backup car. The younger Knowles raced in the top ten for most of the event and ended up 11th at the finish. Randy Hall quickly moved from his 12th starting spot to show in the top five for the first time on lap eight. Hall who has been so impressive in his rookie year in this type of race car simply could not out power or out maneuver his way beyond 4th which he earned on lap 20. He fell to Knowles on lap 29 and rode his Duggan and Duggan – Follman Properties CRS Camry home fifth. Jason DuPont was back in Dean Fitzsimmons’ Shaw Monte Carlo and recorded a very nice sixth place finish. DuPont now has the Canandaigua win, the Weedsport runner-up finish, and last night’s sixth to help offset the prior week’s DNF after the big Black Rock crash. Mikey Wonderling had his best ever Series finish when he raced his stealth looking Baldwin Forest Products Rocket Grand Prix to the line for seventh. The rear suspension was broken for the final laps, but Mikey nursed the car to the finish. Rich Michael was hoping to keep the new winners streak alive and get his first Series win on a track which he knows well from his IMCA Modified experience. Michael raced in the top ten all race long and finished eighth in the Benson Construction Shaw Grand Prix. Glenn Whritenour was very impressive with in his first ever Series start as he raced from 27th to 9th to earn the $100 DART Machinery Hard Charger award. AJ Young returned to the track that his dad raced at about 50 years ago and rounded out the top 10 after making the A from the first B-Mains. The 28 A-Main starters came from four F/A Products – Clevite Engine Parts heat races and two Ed Carley Motorsports B-Mains. Heat race winners were Bruce Miller, TJ Shaw, Jon Rivers, and Jeff Chesebro. Wayne Robertson and Ron Hurd won the B-Mains. The Suzuki Motorcycles and ATVs Hard Luck recipient was Rick Baker. 30 lap Maynard Electric of Hornell A-Main finish: JON RIVERS, Jeff Chesebro, Bruce Miller, Larry Knowles, Randy Hall, Jason DuPont, Mikey Wonderling, Rich Michael, Glenn Whritenour, AJ Young, Jason Knowles, Jeremy Wonderling, Ron Mogavero, Jim Johnson, Ron Baker, Tim Schram, Wayne Robertson, TJ Shaw, Ron Hurd, Jessica Pierce, Jason Bridge, Rich Thornton, Paul Grigsby, John Venuto, Joe Watson, Dennis Peters, Steve Dixon, Neil Patterson DNQ: Ray Henry, Rich Marlott, Jr Peters, Quinn Sutherland, Rick Baker, Donnie Smith, Dave Davis Marketing Partners for the 2006 BRP CanAm Series include: Bicknell Racing Products, Bob Mullen’s Pro Speed, Brad Penn Racing Oil, Can & Bottle Return of Delevan, Clevite Engine Parts, Cool Edge Web Designs, Cousin’s Designs, DANA Corporation, DART Machinery / DART Heads, DIRT MotorSports, DSE1 Race Engines, East Coast Speed.com, Ed Carley Motorsports, F/A Products, Hoosier Tire of Canada, LEAF Racewear, Lias Tire – American Racer, Mohawk Speed Shop, Signs Plus of Kanona, Southeastern Transmissions, Suzuki Motorcycle & ATV Dealers of NY & PA, the Young Family, and the host tracks.
