Jon Rivers Tops BRP CanAm Point Tally St. Catharines, ONT…Jon Rivers tops the point tally of the 41 drivers that have competed in the first two events of the 2006 BRP CanAm Series. “It is too early to be concerned about points. We are just very happy that the new car that Bob Mullen at ProSpeed built for us works so well. Our Chaddock Performance motors and Rocket Grand Prix have been great. Winning at Merrittville and beating Bruce Miller there are stuff you dream about. We are really looking forward to the next [Friday June 23rd] Series event at Ransomville. I have turned a lot of laps there in my DIRT Sportsman. Ransomville is closer to my home that Genesee Speedway where we now race every Saturday,” related Rivers from his day job at the family business - Darrell’s Auto Service. Rivers finished 12th in the 2005 Series standings. Jon Rivers – 185 points - Rivers leads the BRP CanAm Series point standings after two of the twelve 2006 Series point events. Rivers’ Series championship drive received a tremendous boost with his win last month at Merrittville Speedway. The 100 points earned in that event combined with the 85 points earned with a fourth place finish at Black Rock Speedway in the 2006 Series opener result in a 10 point advantage over Series rookie driver Randy Hall. The Merrittville win was the second Series win for the Basom, NY racer. Rivers won last year at his home track, Genesee Speedway, where he was the 2005 late model / super stock track champion. 2. Randy Hall – 175 points - Hall has served notice that he has made the transition to the full fendered BRP CanAm Late Model style race cars in a hurry. Hall, a graduate of IMCA style modifieds, finished third in his BRP CanAm Late Model debut at Black Rock and proved that was no fluke with a great fourth place run at Merrittville. He had never raced at either track before. Hall has won several non-Series late model events already this year including the Jason Dunham Memorial at McKean County Raceway last week. 3. Larry Knowles – 153 points - Knowles is off to a great start in his sophomore year with the BRP CanAm Series. Knowles finished second in the Black Rock opener and twelfth at Merrittville. “Last year was a major league learning experience for me and the crew. We had never even seen most of the tracks that we went to. We were struggling with the car and generally learning a whole new program. Most important we had fun. We had fun last year and so far this year it has been even more fun,” says Knowles. 4. Jeremy Wonderling – 143 points – Wonderling won the opener at Black Rock, but had problems at Merrittville and finished a disappointing 21st. Between the two Series events Wonderling has set the Black Rock Speedway racing world wondering how to slow down the second generation Scio, NY speedster. The Speedway changed their rules in an effort to slow Jeremy and his Ed Carley built Larry Shaw Grand Prix down, but that did not work. Wonderling has been nearly untouchable at the Dundee race track with five wins in seven starts. 5. Tim Schram – 142 points - Schram has been quietly consistent, as is his style, with two top ten finishes. Schram was fifth in the opener and tenth at Merrittville. Tim is looking forward to the next Series stop [Ransomville Speedway Friday June 23] because of all the room to race on the fast half-mile. 6-Paul Grigsby – 132 points – Grigsby’s style is very similar to Schram – quiet and consistent. That style has earned Paul a sixth and thirteen in two Series starts and only 53 points out of the top spot. Grigsby’s 2005 Series campaign was marked with consistency that resulted in five top ten finishes and eighth in the point standings. 7-12 – 8 points separation – knotted behind the top six are Dave DuBois [118 points], Tim Dunham [116 points], TJ Shaw [115 points], Rich Michael [113 points], Todd Rice [112] points, and Darren Kish [110 points]. As Jon Rivers points out it is too early to be concerned with points, but this is clearly a case of where more is better.
