Jeremy Wonderling Wins BRP CanAm Series Opener at Black Rock Dundee, NY…Jeremy Wonderling of Scio, NY topped a 36 car field in the BRP CanAm Series season opener at Black Rock Speedway on Saturday April 15. “Lapped cars, they must do something about those lapped cars,” said Wonderling in victory lane. “Yes, it is great to win anytime and even better to start the season this way, but it was very tough with all those lapped cars.” Wonderling could have slowed down and not encountered “all those lapped cars”, but that isn’t what his Dad taught him to do. Jeremy’s Dad is Mike Wonderling a seasoned veteran of many races and many lapped cars. While Wonderling was worried about lapped cars most of his competitors were most concerned about visibility as an unusually hot, sunny, and windy mid-April day created a dry, slick, and dusty surface. The race was marred by six caution periods and many battered and bruised race cars. The race produced three lead changes between Wonderling and Larry Knowles. Wonderling took advantage of his number two starting position to lead the first 8 laps. Larry Knowles, a former Black Rock Speedway champion, passed Wonderling to lead the next 6 laps. Knowles opened the inside lane with a minor slip in turn two and Wonderling swept his Baldwin Forest Products Shaw Grand Prix past to regain the top spot which he never relinquished. Knowles later went into defense mode as his tires lost bite and Randy Hall, Series rookie contender, went to work on Knowles. Hall was extremely impressive in his first ever 360 Late Model outing. The Olean, NY speedster started 21st by virtue of winning the B-Main. Both Knowles and Hall were “happy” with their podium finishes given the conditions. Jon Rivers advanced from his 10th starting position to battle for second for several laps, but lapped cars and Randy Hall helped Rivers to a fine fourth place finish. Tim Schram showed his great speedy, smooth, and steady style to round out the top five finishers. Dave Dubois, Rich Michael, Jon Lichy, Rick Baker, and Steve Fields completed the top ten. Next up for the BRP CanAm Series is Monday May 22nd at Merrittville Speedway in Thorold, Ontario for a $1000 to win contest that will also be round one of the $2000 Border Battle Bonus mini-series.
