AJ Young Tops BRP CanAm Foes @ McKean Fair Race

E. Smethport, PA…AJ Young can finally smile. Young recorded his first ever BRP CanAm Super Stock A-Main win on Thursday night [8/18] in the 30 Lap Theresa Dixon Memorial at the McKean County Raceway [MCR]. Prior to tonight Young’s best BRP CanAm showing was runner-up to Bob Dixon in the 2004 McKean County Fair event.

Young, the second generation racer from Scio, NY, drew the number two pill and lined his Otis Eastern Gas & Oil Field Service Bullit Intrepid up on the outside of pole starter Neil Patterson. Young blasted by the Chief as the pair lead 25 other anxious racers down the back straight on the opening lap. From there Young never relinquished the top spot and until lap 28 of the 30 lap contest never had a serious challenge.

The serious challenge came from Todd Rice the defending MCR track champion. While Young was out front all by himself Rice was involved in a torrid three and sometimes four car dog fight. After Rice cleared his Bauchard Dodge – Tioga Energy GRT Taurus to second he quickly reeled in Young who was gingerly working his way through lapped traffic. The final two laps were perhaps the best in super stock racing history at the fabled Fairgrounds oval. Young leading Rice by inches as the near capacity grandstand crowd stood and cheered for the pair as they raced to Johnny Powell’s flying checkered flags. Rice probably had the faster car, but Young was on a mission and MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

Jon Lichy watched from the best seat in the house as he peered out the wind screen of his Oldshield Smokes – Den’s Auto Body Shaw Monte Carlo from third position. He would have gladly traded his best seat in the house for either of the top two spots, but third was the best BRP CanAm finish ever for the Native American from Salamanca.

Jeff Chesebro turned in another strong performance in his Cheez’s Performance Exhaust GRT Taurus. Chesebro was very fast at Genesee Speedway last week in his first ever BRP CanAm event, but failed to finish. Tonight Chesebro was very fast early as he charged from 13th at the start to second. He was involved in the great battle with Rice, Lichy, Babbitt, and others and managed to earn fourth place honors.

Veteran Bob Babbitt is always a fast and tough competitor. Tonight Babbitt moved his Arrow Mart Shaw Grand Prix from seventh to fifth. It doesn’t sound like a lot of progress, but you had to see it.

Genesee Speedway’s BRP CanAm winner, Jon Rivers, started in 16th and moved to sixth at the checkers. Jr. Peters, Matt Cobb, Tim Schram, and Mike Wonderling completed the top ten finishers of the Theresa Dixon Memorial.

Cobb came from 27th as a provisional starter to eighth which earned him the Close Racing Supply Hard Charger Award.

Darren Kish the Series point leader had electrical [MSD box] problems and appeared to be a non-factor; however, when he had could get juice to the DSE1 Chevrolet he was fast. Kish finished one lap down in 12th.

The 36 car field used four heats and two B-Mains to determine the 27 starters. Heat race winners were Tim Rockwell, Bob Dixon, AJ Young, and Tim Schram. The B-Mains went to rookie Steve Dixon and Ron Baker.

Next up for the BRP CanAm Super Stocks is their $10,000 event at Merrittville Speedway in Thorold, Ontario, Canada on Saturday night, August 20.

The companion RRS Street Stock race was a very entertaining contest with Darren Morgan topping the 36 car field. Morgan dominated the 20 lap contest in his beautiful Malibu. Chasing Morgan to the checkers was the area’s winningest street stock driver, Andy Michaels. Jason Schoomaker, Bob Morgan, and Paul Davis completed the top five.
