Miller Named Little Valley BRP CanAm Winner at Little Valley

Little Valley, NY-45 BRP CanAm Super Stock Series race teams entered the Sunday May 30 Series opener at Little Valley Speedway. Five heat races and two B-Mains established the 26 car starting field for the first of 12 events that will make up the 2004 BRP CanAm Super Stock Series.

Tim Dunham, one of the Scio Speed Society members, and Port Colborne, Ontario?s Darren Kish brought the classy looking field of Super Stocks [360 Dirt Late Models] to John Powell?s green flag. Kish, fresh off his win in the BRP CanAm Dash for Cash at Merrittville Speedway on Monday night, won the drag race and put his Atkinson?s Delivery Taurus out front and on the bottom of the ?giant? half mile.

Kish opened up a four car length advantage over Dunham until a lap five caution for a spinning Alan Wais slowed the field. Positions were reversed for the restart with Kish on the bottom and Dunham on top; however, the result was the same. Kish won the drag race and lead until the lap ten halfway point when the yellow flew again. This time Kyle Bradigan was on the wrong end of a ?racing incident? with his dad?s beautiful new Grand Prix heading the wrong way on a one way street. The single file restart had Andy Miller now in second from his seventh starting position. Miller was spectacular with his rim rider show, but the long way around was just too long and Kish prevailed for the distance.

Tim Rockwell trailed Miller for third at the checkered flag to record his best ever BRP CanAm Super Stock Series and Little Valley Speedway finish.

Todd Rice wheeled his Ford powered Bauchard Dodge sponsored Taurus home for fourth place honors.

Bill Holmes came from 22nd starting position to fifth at the end of 20 laps to earn Hard Charger Honors.

Rounding out the top ten were: 6th second generation race car driver, Jeremy Wonderling in the Baldwin Forest Products Pontiac; 7th Jason Dupont in the Zippo Chevrolet; 8th Scio Speed Society driver AJ Young in the Otis Eastern Gas & Oil Field Service Dodge, 9th defending BRP CanAm Super Stock Series Champion Bob Dixon in the Duffy?s Inc. Chevrolet, and 10th the hard charging Don Wagner in his beautiful L.C. Transportation Pontiac.

Unfortunately, Kish?s car did not pass technical inspection after the race and his dominating on-track performance was for naught. Kish?s car failed to meet the minimum 104? wheelbase specification and was moved to last in the final tally with all others moving up a position.

Notes:

  • 45 Super Stock teams came to race, not a BRP CanAm Super Stock Series record, but very robust.
  • Making the 26 car starting grid was difficult. Included in the 19 DNQs were former track champions, former race winners, and first time BRP CanAm Super Stock entries.
  • Matt Emerling towed from Delaware, OH to earn the Long Haul Award. He had planned to race at Freedom on Friday, but that race was rained out and he was among the DNQs at Little Valley.
  • Jason Schoomaker made his first BRP CanAm start in the Burger Enterprises Monte Carlo #65 that John Kemp drove last year. Schoomaker was doing double duty by also racing his #129 in the RRS Street Stock portion of the LVS program.
  • Bo Clark was another BRP CanAm first timer doing double duty. Clark also raced in the RRS Sportsman event.
  • Jim Johnson, the defending Genesee Speedway champion, debuted his brand new Mustang bodied Rocket. It was a forgettable debut. An engine problem in hot laps prevented Johnson from running his heat. Repairs were made in time for his B-Main. Starting last in the B, Johnson was on his way to the front when again engine problems beset the beautiful Upstate Utilities Mike Ognibene Ford Finger Lakes Mortgage entry.
  • Second [or is it third] generation driver Tom Schnars made his first ever BRP CanAm start in #M1, a number made famous by his father at McKean [when it was Smethport] Raceway, Stateline Speedway, and the old Sugar Grove, PA Skyline Speedway. Tom?s #M1 was a Chevy Monte Carlo, not an Oldsmobile 88 coupe.
  • Paul Grigsby had drive train problem starting in hot laps and, despite an all evening effort, was not able to correct the problems. He will be ready for BRP CanAm 2004 #2 at Freedom Raceway on June 18.
  • Tim Dunham had a great run going early in the mai, but a flat tire during a caution period sent Dunham scurrying to the pits for a fresh American Racer tire. Tim worked his way back to 16th at the checkered flag.
  • The Scio Speed Society was very well represented with Bo Clark, Tim Dunham, Tim Schram, Jeremy Wonderling, Mike Wonderling, Jr., and AJ Young all entered in BRP CanAm 2004 #1. Although Jay Deming still officially resides in Andover, his mother claims he spends most of his time in Scio. It must be those Scio Speed Society meetings!
  • A repeat of Miller family 1-2-3 finish of BRP CanAm 2003 #1 was not possible for BRP CanAm 2004 #1 because Dave?s [the father] car was damaged at McKean County Raceway on Saturday night. Bruce reports that his dad is not up to overnight race car repairs until he retires from Dresser. Bruce may have had a chance at a podium finish had he not suffered a flat tire at about the halfway point. A new Hoosier tire and Bruce were able to record a 19th place finish in the Series opener.
  • Andy Miller?s win was his first in the BRP CanAm Super Stock Series. Andy?s brother Bruce won the Little Valley opener in 2003 and his father Dave won BRP CanAm 2003 #4 at Gasport Speedway.
  • The 2004 BRP CanAm Super Stock Series event scheduled at Gasport Speedway may not take place since the Speedway is currently closed waiting for new ownership.
  • Hard Charger Award winner, Bill Holmes, advanced from 22nd to 4th. Others with good forward progress included Don Wagner [16th to 9th], TJ Shaw [17th to 10th], Wayne Adamczak [18th to 11th], Jack B. Quick Harrington [25th to 12th], and the senior member of the BRP CanAm Super Stock Series, 68 year old Ron Baker [24th to 13th].
  • Jim Mazur and Jr. Peters must have had magnets attached to their cars.
  • Dean Inglis is the new hired gun in the Darwin Snyder #12 Monte Carlo.
